Our efforts to wage peace, fight disease, and build hope around the world illustrate relevant principles of American Government and Civics, International Economics, United States and World History, and Geography.
Lessons found here align with and support the Georgia Standards of Excellence for Social Studies. Each lesson incorporates material from current Carter Center programs, which are described in depth on this website. Excellence standards listed on each lesson are suggested; additional standards may apply. Also, lessons may be easily adapted for use with curricula in other states and countries. The began in 1996 with the opening of the Plains High School Museum as the main visitor's center for the National Park Service. The opening of Plains High School facilitated a partnership with the Georgia Department of Education, Sumter County Schools, and the National Park Service.
The current Education Program operates as a partnership between the Georgia Department of Education, The National Park Service, and the Friends of Jimmy Carter National Park Service. The Georgia Standards of Excellence are utilized to develop curricular and programming designed to foster opportunity for students to learn about the life and legacy of President and Mrs. Carter.
