Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter was announced today as winner of the XXII edition of the Catalonia International Prize for his "heart and courage" in defense of peace and human rights worldwide.
The Catalonia International Prize, endowed with 100,000 euros and the sculpture "the key and the land" by Antoni Tapies, was established by the Generalitat (government) of Catalonia, Spain, in 1989 and is given to those persons who have contributed decisively by their work to the development of cultural, scientific, or human values in the world.
"I am grateful for this honor, and I will cherish it as an inspiration to the many people working to advance peace and human rights worldwide," Pres. Carter said.
