ATLANTA (July 25, 2022) — The Carter Center condemns the executions carried out today by the State Administration Council in Myanmar. The resumption of the death penalty in Myanmar after a moratorium of decades is a sad and unnecessary step back. The Carter Center expresses its condolences to the families of the four men who were executed and compassion for all those suffering as the result of the military coup d’état. The Carter Center, which has worked for years to help Myanmar embrace democratic norms, urges a return to the path toward democracy and respect for human rights, rule of law, and peace.
