ATLANTA....I endorse the call for a moratorium on executions in Georgia and wholeheartedly support the American Bar Association's Georgia Death Penalty Assessment Team Report. I have openly opposed the death penalty for a long time. There are serious questions about the fairness of its application in our state. If we are not going to abolish the death penalty, a moratorium would give time to thoroughly examine its imposition in the different counties in our state and develop uniform legal procedures that would more accurately ensure that innocent people are not killed. The ABA report is a welcome contribution to public thinking on an important topic that affects all Georgians.
