ATLANTA….Carter Center Mental Health Program Director Thom Bornemann has joined a special disaster assistance team organized by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and deployed September 12 to Houston to provide urgently needed support.
The team is among two other 10-member groups of experts being sent to Baton Rouge, La., and Jackson, Miss., where they will consult and train state workers, local officials, mental health workers, and SAMHSA staff who have been on the front lines of the areas impacted by Hurricane Katrina.
The teams will assist on-site staff largely at state incident command centers and elsewhere as needed with immediate consultation and support. In addition, the team will assist with long-range planning to best support an ongoing and well- functioning work force throughout this disaster response.
