Georgetown, Guyana...On Friday, Jan. 31, the Carter Center's Guyana office will be celebrating the launch of its Resource Center, located at the Center's Guyana headquarters at 34 North and King Streets, Lacytown, in Georgetown.
The Resource Center will offer a wide selection of printed and electronic information for nonprofit organizations on such topics as the role of civil society, training methods, elections, indigenous rights, women in development, and justice and human rights, among others. A computer workstation will be provided for research and networking purposes. Carter Center staff will be available to assist with all inquiries and research and to provide information about the holdings of other libraries and resource centers. The Resource Center also will offer Carter Center informational materials.
The Resource Center will be open by appointment to members of all established nonprofit organizations or NGOs in Guyana, other international agencies, government agencies, and tertiary level students conducting research.
The Resource Center is organized under the auspices of the U.S. Agency for International Development's program More Responsive and Participatory Governance and Rule of Law in Guyana. Through this program, The Carter Center is working to strengthen the judicial system and the capacity of civil society or nonprofit organizations in Guyana to contribute to public debate and public policy-making, with a focus on organizations that involve and assist women, youth, and Amerindians. The Carter Center is working with the National Democratic Institute and the International Foundation for Election Systems in the overall project. NDI supports legislative and local government reforms, while IFES provides technical assistance on electoral administration.
